Our Orthopaedic program

Our goal is to help patients get back the quality of life they enjoyed before their orthopaedic injury. We offer many non-invasive therapies and the latest surgical techniques, which allows us to customize treatment to fit your needs.

We have the state’s busiest joint replacement program, which includes the latest robotic surgery tools, including the Mako® system. Both Roper Hospital and Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital have received accreditation as Blue Distinction® Centers for Knee and Hip Replacement by Blue Cross Blue Shield

Easy access to care

When you’re experiencing pain or an injury getting fast, effective treatment is critical. That’s why we offer same-day or next-day appointments with our orthopaedic team.

As the Lowcountry’s most comprehensive healthcare network, Roper St. Francis Healthcare has the largest number of orthopaedic locations in the Lowcountry. That means you’ll be able to find the expert care you need close to home.

Osteoporosis and fracture service

Since osteoporosis is the leading cause of fractures for people over age 50, Roper St. Francis Healthcare has created an Osteoporosis and Fracture service to help older adults take charge of their bone and joint health.

The team provides screening for adults age 50 and older with osteoporosis risk factors, all women age 65 and older and men age 70 and older. Screenings include special X-rays that measure bone density (DEXA scan). We also use blood tests to look at overall bone health.

Once we get the screening results and understand your risk factors, we can make recommendations to help lower your fracture risk. This can include medicine, nutrition, balance therapy, fall prevention classes and smoking cessation resources.

Our certified fracture liaison and program coordinator will also work closely with orthopaedic doctors, primary care doctors, OB/GYNs and endocrinologists to make sure everyone on the care team is informed and involved with maintaining your bone health.

In-House durable medical equipment department

As part of Roper St. Francis Healthcare’s orthopaedic services, patients have easy access to durable medical equipment (DME). With an in-house DME Department, our orthopaedic doctors can give out DME during appointments, so you don’t need to fit and adjust the equipment on your own. You’ll have access to more than 200 DME items, such as:

  • Slings
  • Ankle and knee braces
  • Canes, crutches or walkers
  • Orthotics

If you need a custom-made device, such as a knee brace or orthotic, our specialized DME team can help. The DME team will work with you and your doctor to fit the device and show how to use it safely.
